What Is a Verifiable Credential? 📜 VCs are digital cryptographically secure and privacy-preserving versions of documents and credentials that people can present to organizations for verification. 💼Verifiable Credentials are one of the three pillars of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), an approach to digital identity that gives individuals control of their digital identities. The other two pillars are blockchain and decentralized identifiers (DIDs). The main parties involved in the use of Verifiable Credentials are: 🔑The Issuer: has the authority to issue credentials 🔒The Holder: stores the credential in their digital wallet 🌐The Verifier. - validates or authenticates the credential. Product and Engineering Update! 🚀A major undertaking for the past weeks - Wallet Notifications. This feature is now in the test stage and once completed it will let users receive alerts about incoming requests for verification or accepting credentials. 🚧 Our efforts on the Threshold Signatures continue, this will allow issuers to delegate issuance authority to other parties, avoiding the need to always be online for issuing. It also allows holders to hide the issuer's identity from the verifier to avoid correlation. 💻 Finally, we've recently made some adjustments to our roadmap to better align it with the current priorities and demands of the community and market. Why use VCs and DIDs for authentication? Privacy 🛡 Web3 introduced the ability to sign in using cryptocurrency wallets. But with crypto wallets, all the user data that a developer can request and verify is on the blockchain, limiting the types of data that can be verified. What if you need to verify users' private data? No one wants their private data on an immutable public database. Verifiable Credentials and DIDs enable Privacy-Preserving Attestations: they allow users to prove data about themselves while retaining privacy over their data. VCs - like a Student ID card - are stored in a wallet app on your device, not the blockchain. When you present the cred for verification, you can present only parts of it (Selective Disclosure) or even prove something without disclosing the data that backs up the proof (ZKPs).

How will the demand for DOCK tokens grow? DOCK tokens are required for every interaction with the Dock Blockchain including creating Decentralized Identifiers, and revoking Verifiable Credentials. More organizations using Dock means more demand for tokens. The Dock API automatically processes the tokens removing the duty from Credential Issuers. How are Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) used for sign-in? Each DID can have one (or many) public-private cryptographic key pairs. Users who click the Sign-In button on a website will see a QR Code to scan with their Digital Identity Wallet app. The user selects what DID to use, and the DID's private key digitally signs a VC, proving the user controls the DID. The VC is sent to the website, which verifies that the credential was indeed cryptographically signed by the correct user and grants the user website access.
